Work has been carried out in phases and involves extension of the terminal. The expanded terminal will feature security, immigration and customs processing. The facility will also possess new hold rooms, bus remote stands, and extra remote parking spots following the expansion.
Among other features of the project include remodelling of the present and new boarding bridges, apron as well as a taxiway. The project is expected to enhance the passenger handling capacity of the airport by more than twice the existing capacity.
The project, having a duration of three years, has received $100 million in loan from the Inter-American Development Bank and the Overseas Private Investment Corporation. Contributions have also come from the Costa Rican government and other sponsors.
