Berkeley Heights building won the award for its energy-efficient features. One primary feature was to include high energy performance windows that has enabled 90% of the building’s interiors to access natural daylight, reducing the need for artificial light. The building’s design also employed flushless urinals and reflective roof material with about 75% of waste diverted from the landfill during construction.
The lighting system of the building has been designed to maximise energy performance. Water-conserving plumbing fixtures have been installed to reduce the building’s overall water use by 30%. Regionally extracted low emitting materials such as adhesives, paint, carpet, coating, have been extensively used. FSA-certified wood from renewable forests was also widely used throughout the construction.
In keeping with the environmental theme, the floors of Berkley Heights are based on nature. The second floor is painted blue with a water theme. The third floor is green with a botanic theme. The fourth floor is painted orange, dedicated to product sustainability. Messages illustrating L’Oreal’s commitment to sustainable development are displayed throughout the floors. Conference rooms feature high-end technology. The building also has a concierge service and an on-site cafe.
Berkeley Heights has become the second of L’Oréal USA’s facilities to receive LEED certification. The firm’s Franklin manufacturing plant won the LEED Silver for its eco-friendly features in December 2010.
