Central Saint Giles aims to refocus people’s attention by creating a stimulating new work environment, a good area to live in, and a brand new piazza for central London, which will be served by an array of dining experiences. The development will provide 375,000 square feet of office space, 56 private apartments, and 53 affordable homes, and a selection of restaurant and retail units at ground level. It will also include the creation of new access routes across the site, together with a public courtyard at Princes Circus which will help reinstate Saint Giles High Street as a tree-lined place to live, work or visit.
Piano aims to clad 20 different facets of Central Saint Giles with red, orange, green and yellow glazed ceramic cladding to emerge as a striking new landmark in St Giles, defined by dramatic facades of primary colors. The property is being developed by Legal & General Property (L&G) and Mitsubishi Estate Company.
The purpose of the cladding is to brighten up the long neglected corner of London with a bold contrast. Piano explains that the idea to use these vibrant colors came when observed the impact of a sudden burst of colors in this part of the city while studying the site.
Central Saint Giles will deliver major improvements to the public realm of Saint Giles, including contributions toward community safety and improving Saint Giles Churchyard and Phoenix Gardens. The project will also vastly improve pedestrian links between Covent Garden and Bloomsbury.
