Powerpay is undertaking the $10 million renovation to convert the market into an office building for the company’s 130-member work force.
The design plan will retain the building’s atrium-like interior and its soaring post-and-beam ceilings along with providing energy-efficient office space.
The renovated building will feature reduced water usage and will use locally produced building materials and incorporate energy-efficient improvements. The new office space will be equipped with showers, a workout room and a public cafe.
Construction is scheduled to be completed in December 2008.
In December 2008, PowerPay had purchased the former Portland Public Market building, which was launched in 1998 by the non-profit Libra Foundation to help farmers and small businesses by extending economic development into the city’s Bayside neighborhood.
The market closed in 2006, after Libra decided the building had achieved its goals for Bayside and that the strong real estate market made it a good time to sell properties in Portland.
