The facility is the first facility of Metro North to have achieved LEED certification. The recently acquired and renovated building features several sustainable and energy efficient elements and contains no toxic substance, based on which it won Silver certification. These elements have been verified by a third party agency.
Metro North’s White Plains building features low-flow water fixtures, high-efficiency lighting and HVAC equipment, extensive use of daylight, and provides preferred parking for low-emitting vehicles.
The building was developed using local as well as recycled materials. About 72% of the total construction debris has been reused during the construction of the building. The kitchen countertop in the building has been created using recycled glass. Even the carpet tiles used throughout have a high-recycled content.
The building has low-flow water fixtures in the sinks, toilets and urinals, which bring about water saving of about 34%. About 79% of the equipment used in the building, such as copier and refrigerator are Energy-Star rated and contribute towards saving power.
The building has several dedicated bins for collecting recyclable materials, such as glass, plastic, metal and papers. The building has earned extra LEED points for being in close proximity to the train station, bus lines, as well as community services such as restaurants, shopping, post office, and banks and thus discouraging the use of auto-mobiles.
