The new 460-bed hospital is currently in the construction stage and is expected to be ready in June 2012. The new hospital will result in the addition of a 2.4 million square feet clinical and research facility to the hospital’s existing campus.
The interior of the hospital would have a natural theme marked with natural wood textures and images of butterflies, animals and birds, rendering a feeling of optimism, calm and hope. The New Main Hospital and Campus would boast several features such as Magic Forest, Animal Friends and a 6-acre park for lifting the mood of the patients and their family.
The Magic Forest will be located at the space connecting the new construction with the existing main lobby of the hospital. Magic Forest would have seating arrangements and a café with a seek-and-find built into the walls. The Magic Forest’s large fabricated trees, soundscape and changing lights will infer it a characteristic of whimsical forest.
The hospital will also have Animal Friends – six to eight feet tall, hand carved and solid wood animal sculptures, that are being developed by Ohio-based Carousel Works. The outside of the hospital would have a six acre park that will feature a fragrance garden, maze, and quiet place for sitting and reading.
The hospital, in order to ease the navigation, will color code each pathway featuring Animal Friends. The entire interior of the hospital would feature butterflies. The other prominent design aspect include the use of white design, black and white photography and saturated color at important places. The hospital will also have an anticlockwise drop-off loop with a canopy for the patient to exit closest to the door. Further, the hospital will have underground parking space.
In addition to these design features, the hospital would also have a key-card system, which would enable the families to explore only the patient’s allotted floor and common areas, thereby boosting the security aspect of the hospital.
