Springdale Park Elementary School received both the honours at the Georgia AIA state conference in early October 2010. This creative adaptive reuse project by Perkins+Will, within a historic district of Atlanta, is the first LEED-certified school in the Atlanta Public School district.

Architects have created a nurturing and light-filled environment blending historic residential and modern educational architecture. The reuse of two historically relevant structures on site forms one of the sustainable priorities of the project. It also has at least 20% recycled content and 10% locally manufactured building materials and an array of energy saving systems including a ground source heat exchange field, also a first for the Atlanta Public Schools.

Additionally, the green roof on the new back addition of the elementary school opens onto the student corridor fostering student interaction with light and nature on a daily basis. These visible green choices are conceived as important learning tools for young students.
