The recently renovated and expanded Physical Education Center is the first LEED-Gold Certified facility in Winnebago County, and the first Illinois community college facility to recieve the certification.
The LEED award scheme has taken into account the site and landscaping design, water and energy efficiency, use of sustainable materials and resources, recycling of construction waste, indoor air quality, and innovative green design.
The renovation project involved refurbishment of the 40-year-old infrastructure, athletic facilities and classrooms on the campus. A state-of-the-art fitness lab and dance studio has been added as a part of the renovation. The facility has received high-tech ‘smart’ classrooms and lecture spaces along with sun-lit faculty offices.
The renovation scheme was designed by Illinois-based Saavedra Gehlhausen Architects in association with Chicago-based Demonica Kemper Architects; and constructed by local builder Sjostrom and Sons Construction Company.
