The US Department of Transportation announced that it would be providing the Commonwealth Ports Authority with two grants that totals to a sum of $2,536,634 for the airports improvements. The announcement was made by Congressman Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan.
Amongst the grants awarded is one for $1,000,000, which will be used in improving the condition of the airport’s pavement and in order to upgrade the pavement to the present standards of design.
A grant of $1,536,634, which is the second grant made by the department, is stated to be spent on replacing the public address system at the Saipan terminal. The said amount would also be used in refurbishing the public restrooms and in repairing the damaged roof of the terminal that leaks, thus causing a safety hazard to passengers.
The Francisco C. Ada/Saipan International has been classified as a small-hub primary airport by the DOT’s Federal Aviation Administration, which also stated that funded projects were important in meeting the needs of the flying public, for their safety, and for the efficiency of terminal operations.
