Both the projects by Scott Edwards Architects have received the Award of Merit. The Cottages at Cape Kiwanda project in Pacific City, Oregon, has received the award in the category of ‘Outstanding Attached Project’.
The three phase development includes 18 fractional ownership units, a 23 oceanfront boutique hotel, grand lodge with restaurant, day spa, and outdoor pool. Other firms involved with the development on Pacific City’s beachfront include SFA Design Group, HHPR, Innovative Designed Environments Associates, Christopher Freshley Landscape, and R&H Construction.
Bambinos Bilingual Learning Center in Hood River, Oregon, has received the award in the category of ‘Outstanding Office’/’Professional Building’. The 8,400 square feet child care facility houses programs for infants, toddlers, pre-school, and after school care.
The volumes that hold the classrooms and other major functions are twisted in plan, to create a playful feel and evoke the appearance of toy blocks. The toy block design is integrated in both the interior common spaces, as well as the exterior elevations. The cedar-wrapped boxes of the classrooms alternate with deeply recessed service areas, allowing the identity of each classroom to be expressed on the building, under the shelter of a single unifying roof.
The central lobby space is designed to flow to a covered exterior courtyard. The lobby intersects a single circulation spine which clearly organizes the building. The angled walls of the classrooms create a variety of movement and play. Translucent wall panels that sheath natural materials such as leaves, flowers and blades of grass are integrated at the entry to each classroom. This feature offers a unique identity to each class rooms.
The school is designed to utilize maximum sunlight infiltration through skylights. Skylights are created through punctuating classroom nodes in the corridor.
Other partners on the project include VLMK Consulting Engineers, MFIA, Shapiro Didway Landscape Architecture, and Frank Construction.
