Due to its waterfront location and the site’s previous use by the US Navy, the location requires an extensive remediation plan including the excavation and removal of 296,000 tonnes of contaminated soil.
Construction management and contracting company Walsh Brothers worked in partnership with Perkins + Will and sub-consultant Haley & Aldrich to formulate a cost effective remediation and disposal plan for site’s soils. The residential nature of the Charlestown Navy Yard necessitates a detailed logistics plan to be developed in order to gain the approval of the abutters. Walsh Brothers developed a detailed mitigation plan for construction access and travel while managing noise, dust and vibration impacts throughout the neighbourhood.
