The departures level has been enhanced by 7, 300 square meters and a new outbound hall for the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service has been opened. A dynamically integrated public space named The Forum, designed by Australian architecture practice Woodhead, has been incorporated featuring more waiting areas and food, beverage and retail outlets for passengers. The space includes the largest duty-free shop in the Southern Hemisphere.
The renovation also included the redevelopment of 30,000 square meters of the existing departures level to provide upgraded gate lounges, waiting areas, and more seating. An additional 120 meters of moving walkways and a new landside food court were also added. A new arrivals level baggage reclaim carousel was commissioned for increased A380 capacity.
Originally opened by Queen Elizabeth II in May 1970, the International Terminal is used by 37 international airlines flying to 46 destinations around the world. Sydney Airport is one of the oldest continually operated airports in the world, and the busiest airport in Australia.
