The new pop music center will be built near the MRT Kunyang Station and will comprise a main stadium with a capacity to seat 4,500 and 6,000. It will also include a performing plaza with 15,000 seating capacity, a hall of fame, a digital library, live houses for performances by independent bands, and display rooms and offices to organize different functions.

The design of the music hall should be in sync with the local community and the local music scene. Construction of the Taipei Pop Music Center is scheduled to begin in 2012, and is slated to be open to the public by 2014.

Lee Yong-ping, commissioner of the Department of Cultural Affairs, Taipei City, announced the competition in a press conference held on August 20, 2009. An estimated $106.4 million has been allotted for the construction of the center.

Proposals for the contest need to be submitted before October 19, 2009. The design will be judged by a seven-people jury led by Lars Lerup, dean of the Rice School of Architecture, Houston Texas, will select three finalists and four Superb Design teams on October 23, while the final results will be announced on January 29, 2010.
