The new high rise structure at 901 Walnut St will replace a vacant two-story building. The project also involves renovation of a building adjacent to 901 Walnut, now used for outpatient neurological care, and connecting the two buildings. The renovated buildings will house ambulatory-care programs and academic offices of the neuroscience hospital. The neuroscience hospital will convert the vacated space to operating rooms and 28 inpatient beds.

The 901 Walnut building will be connected by a bridge to the 22-story Edison Building at 9th and Sansom streets. This building will accommodate administrative offices for the various university schools. The Edison Building will also be renovated to function as a ‘front door’.

The expansion project was mainly driven by the surging student enrollment in recent years. The construction of the new tower is set to begin in April 2010 and is expected to be completed in 18 months.

The university consists of three constituent colleges; Jefferson Medical College, Jefferson College of Graduate Studies, and Jefferson College of Health Professions.
