The $17 million Herman and Dorothy Johnson Residence Hall, also known as Johnson Hall, opened in August 2009. It is UMKC’s first facility named for an African American. It is a four-storey, 328-bed building featuring blue, yellow and brown accent walls with an orange roof. The residence hall features two wings of semi-suite, double- and single-occupancy rooms connected via a glass-encased corridor.
Around 2005, the Student Government Association passed a resolution requesting that all future UMKC buildings adhere to LEED-certification standards. This was the first facility built after that resolution.
The residence hall will be featured on 30 September 2010 at the EDC’s annual awards program, receive special recognition in KC Business Magazine, and be presented with a banner for the exterior of the building, recognizing it as an 2010 EDC Cornerstone Awards Finalist.
The Cornerstone Award recognises buildings with at least two of the characteristics namely: capital investments, employment increases and improvements to neighbourhoods or business districts.
