The 21,000 square metre hospital will have evidence-based design to maximise efficient operations and quality and safety for patients, staff and physicians; elder-friendly, patient-centred facilities to support excellence and innovation; and technology to improve cost effectiveness.
The 95-bed hospital will be constructed on the existing hospital site. It will include a clinical support building and parking facility. Alternate parking areas will be established prior to the start of construction and will include temporary parking lots adjacent to Yucalta Lodge and on Birch Street carel.
There will be capacity for up to 95-beds including mental health and addictions beds. The design will lay emphasis on single-patient rooms, featuring a private bathroom to prevent the spread of infections, to reduce patient transfers and falls, and to reduce re-admissions and lengths of stay. It will also include an All
Nations Healing Room, and a clinical support building available for the University of British Columbia to use as a teaching space and accommodations.
Construction is expected to begin in late 2013 or early 2014 and complete in mid-to-late 2017.
