Missouri-based full service architectural firm Arcturis will lead the sustainable renovation of Cupples II building. The scheme will commence in September 2010, and will house the Arts and Sciences program.
Arcturis is evaluating the inclusion of bike storage, showers and lockers in the Cupples II building as a part of the university’s Bicycle Master Plan. The plan defines a set of actions and guidelines to increase the use of bicycles for campus commuting and help the city’s transportation system become more environmentally, economical and socially sustainable.
The building will get eight state-of-the-art pool classrooms, which will be shared among the departments of the College of Arts & Sciences. The renovation scheme’s main objective is to create more and better classrooms, to provide a combined space for the College of Arts & Sciences, and to add new space for the graduate school and Office of Undergraduate Research.
The scheme is aiming to achieve silver certificate in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). With four Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-certified buildings on campus, the university is aiming to achieve LEED-Silver certification for the Cupples II project.
The College of Arts & Sciences is spread out in several buildings and the renovated facility will act as the main hub or anchor for students and staff. Most of the departments in the School of Engineering & Applied Science will be relocated to the renovated Brauer Hall. The project is slated for July 2011 completion.
