The design of the airport will enable future expansions to be undertaken with ease. The scope of agreement which has been named MC5 will include construction and civil works for the passenger terminal, the control tower, the service buildings and electronic systems and equipment.
The centre element of the construction will be a new passenger terminal covering an area of 71,000 square metres which can handle one million passengers per annum. A new four km-long runway will also be built that can handle the equivalent of the Airbus A380. Also on the cards are state-of-the-art air traffic control tower, a modern Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility, fuel farm, catering building, and other facilities conforming to an international-class Code-F standard airport.
A cargo terminal capable of handling up to 100,000 tons of air freight per year will also be constructed as part of the project. The facility will also serve as an international and domestic hub for sea cargo with the Port of Salalah and the Salalah Free Zone.
A 30-month construction time frame has been specified for the execution of the Salalah Airport.
