The modules were specified by consulting mechanical and electrical engineers Michael Popper Associates and include luminaries produced by lighting manufacturer Metro that would soon become a part of the Crucible Theatre.

The Crucible Theatre is a 980 seat auditorium known for its theatrical productions. It also hosts the annual World Snooker Championships.

About 750 OSRAM COINlight-OSTAR LED modules have been installed in the main auditorium, as part of a major renovation project that took place at the Crucible site. The original lighting of the theater used over one thousand 40W R50 lamps which required a regular changing and caused a constant maintenance problem as the ceiling was fifteen meters high from the floor level. It also consumed very high amounts of energy.

The new 756 OSRAM COINlight-OSTAR units are said to achieve comparatively higher light levels and expects to save 17 tons of CO2 a year. These units, as claimed by Osram, does not require any maintenance. These units are also said to eliminate the need for changing lamps on a regular basis.

The COINlight-OSTAR LED module can be used on a wide range of internal applications and is suitable for orientation or accent lighting. According to lighting manufacturer Metro Ltd., who has included the modules in its luminaires, these LED modules are a suitable option for The Crucible Theatre, as they offer an extremely long lifetime and gives excellent colour rendering.
