Harry Angping, the chairman of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), was reported stating that the diving pool had become a ‘fish pond’ due to lack of maintenance. PSC chief declared that the facility is not conducive and safe for the training of athletes, which necessitated the renovation.

Angping stated that in order to meet the International Swimming Federation (FINA) standard, the engineering department of the PSC has increased the height of the diving boards to 10 meters, 7.5 meters and five meters. The depth of the pool had also been increased to 16 feet.

Part of the renovations also included repair works in the 24-room dormitory. Each room can now accommodate eight athletes and features its own bathroom and air-conditioning facilities.

Earlier renovations included the renovation of the Rizal Memorial Track Stadium at the Adriatico extension, which would soon become a sports mall. Currently, the dormitories at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex are in the process of reconstruction. The project also plans to reconstruct the Rizal Memorial Football field.

The project also saw the renovation of the fencing hall and the laundry area, which has six large washing machines for the athletes.

The facilities inside the pool area had last undergone a renovation in 1986.
