The first phase of this impressive refurbishment took place in the summer of 2014, and a year on Antron® fibres can be found once again in the carpet tiles specified for the completion of this large scale project.

As with phase one, Stride Treglown was tasked with specification, commenting, "We had specified Quadrant carpets for phase one as we liked the density of the pile and the very ‘tight’ feel the tiles had, which was ideal for where trolleys are used extensively. We were also keen on the design and colour choices – the product has been very successful, so it was a ‘no brainer’ to use it again!

"The design in phase two was the same, although we used different accent colours to phase one. The library historically looked very similar floor-to-floor, so we’ve attempted to give each space more of its own identity."

During phase two, 2000m2 of Perspective Kar were specified, along with 800m2 of Elements Athabasca and 580m2 of Elements Pasu; each of these products are made using Antron® LumenaTM fibre, with hues comprising light and dark greys alongside a statement green colour. Antron® LumenaTM colours are integrated into the fibre, so that sunlight and cleaning products have a minimal effect, helping the designs chosen by Stride Treglown to stay looking good for a long time.

With a cross-section that minimises the appearance of soiling and a surface that makes it easier to clean, Antron® LumenaTM fibre is ideal for demanding educational environments. A choice of over 200 solution-dyed colours provides carpet manufacturers like Quadrant with the ability to create striking designs that also meet practical demands.

The use of carpet tiles also takes acoustics into account, a critical consideration in a university library environment such as this with Stride Treglown cleverly combining the short pile of Perspective with the longer pile of Elements, combatting sound and absorbing the wearing effects of footfall and wheeled trolleys.

With the linear design of Perspective and heavy textural quality of Elements, Antron® LumenaTM fibre fulfils its role as the unsung hero, and the team at Stride Treglown were particularly pleased with the outcome of the project and the part Antron® carpet fibre played.

"The Antron® LumenaTM fibres used in phase one still look excellent. Since installation, these carpets have been cleaned several times and still look as good as new. The library is intensively used and is open 24 hours a day during term time weeks, so the carpets take a lot of punishment, giving us confidence in those recently installed during phase two of this project."
