The European Standard for Rendering adopted by the UK in 2005 is not always followed and contractors unnecessarily risk claims when they use the galvanised beads they picked up at their local builders’merchant. This Standard stipulates that the beading choice is between stainless steel or PVCu, but only specialist merchants offer this option. Stainless steel prices have gone through the roof lately and so the only viable option is PVCu.

It was interesting to note that, in an article in May’s Professional Builder by a major plasterboard manufacturer and supplier of own brand galvanised beading, they advise against scraping away surplus plaster from the bead as it may lead to damage to the bead’s zinc coating. It seems odd that they still promote such inferior accessories.

PVCu beads are now widely available and a guarantee of freedom from corrosion makes their selection a no-brainer. They are equally competitive with metal beads for most applications and can be supplied in a wide variety of colours for upmarket rendering projects.
