The award-winning practice is well known for breathing new life into old buildings while minimising their carbon footprint.

Sanya Polescuk comments: “We specify Bette product regularly because they offer both high quality and extensive choice of sizes and shapes. We take great care about whole-life-cycle-carbon in construction and Bette’s product durability fulfils that requirement too.”

Bette baths, shower trays and basins are made of glazed titanium-steel, are fully recyclable and so durable that they come with a 30-year warranty.

A BetteOcean bath with Bette waste, overflow and filling unit was chosen for the ground floor flat, while a BetteUltra shower tray was used on the first floor.

The BetteOcean bath is designed to enable both comfortable bathing and showing. It has steep sides at the tap end for maximum standing space when showering, and a sloping back rest at the other end for comfortable bathing. It is available in an extensive range of sizes from 1500 x 700mm to 1800 x 800mm and in a wide range of colours.

BetteUltra shower trays can be installed flush with the floor or above the floor. Made of glazed titanium-steel, they are sturdy, durable, easy to clean and can be selected with one of Bette’s almost invisible anti-slip surfaces. They are available in a wide range of sizes from 700 x 700mm to 1800 x 1000mm and 2000 x 900mm, and in an extensive choice of colours, including matt options.

Originally Victorian stables with staff accommodation above, the mid-terrace mews building had been partially converted into a house in the 1980s. It included an un-insulated attic, an open garage-cum-store room on the ground floor and an extensive number of bathrooms. The brief asked for an efficient, future-proofed, pair of self-contained homes with a break-through spot to inter-connect in the future.

Landfill and embodied carbon were reduced through salvaging, restoring and re-using many building elements found on site, as well as applying recycled materials and limiting the use of cement. On the roof, solar hot water panels are recessed into the southern pitch while a pair of heavily insulated, yet quietly modern dormers sit on the North-facing pitch.

A simple palette of materials includes terrazzo tiling with 40% recycled porcelain.
