For a Mayfair dining landmark celebrating a heritage of 85 years, the multi-million pound refurbishment of Quaglino’s required a lighting design every bit as iconic as the restaurant itself, and thanks to Into Lighting and Evo spotlights from Precision, one of the capital’s finished establishments once again delivers an atmosphere to match the renowned culinary quality within.

Russell Sage Studio were commissioned by restaurant group D&D London to revitalise this iconic venue, and while original Art-Deco elements of the restaurant design have been maintained, including the signature sweeping staircase and lavish balcony bar, additional developments from Russell Sage include a wonderful cocktail bar that will delight patrons with an expansive menu of champagne and classic cocktails.

A further addition was the inclusion of an intimate stage area, perfect for evening entertainment as the restaurant transforms into a live music destination, with a curated programme of performances from DJs and lounge bands.

Into Lighting were assigned as lighting design consultants by Russell Sage with the brief of a scheme that suited these developments and luxurious interior. The majority of the scheme involved designing precise architectural lighting, which Into Lighting built on top of with a textural lighting scheme.

Into Lighting appreciated the minimal design of Precision’s Evo X16 LED spotlight and specified them in black to complement the dramatic interior of the venue. As the luminaires could not be recessed, Into Lighting required a luminaire with an integral driver. As such, Evo X16s were mounted on Precision’s monopoints to fulfil this criterion.

Art-Deco architectural features revealed by Evo X16s

To highlight the aesthetic features within the restaurant, the luminaires were used to illuminate the sides of the pillars and to highlight design features within the venue, including characteristic artwork along the walls.

Further Evo X16 spotlights were used to provide soft pools of light to the tables, which Guardian reviewer Marina O’Loughlin reported as heightening the glamour of the ambience, and brings to mind the history of Quaglino’s, with regular patrons including royalty and stars of screen and stage alike.

Honeycomb louvres were use to minimise glare and maximise viewing comfort for guests, demonstrating Into Lighting’s consideration for detail within an expansive scheme, and showcases the optical control present throughout the Precision portfolio.
