Three of Shaw Contract EMEA’s carpet tile collections were specified in JLL’s new Canary Wharf office, 20 Water Street, London. One of the most sustainable buildings in the UK, the new office features Shaw Contract’s Auxiliary, Rapid Select and Simply by Nature collections, all of which are Cradle to Cradle Certified and made in the UK, in the company’s carbon neutral manufacturing facility.
Teams from across JLL, including its design and build company Tétris came together to create a flexible space, through a design approach focused on agility, collaboration, creativity and community.
Shaw Contract’s Design Manager Kerry Deffley says: “It is exciting to see the way JLL and Tétris have approached this very contemporary office design which is about delivering the next generation of workplaces. It is also a great example for us to show how our carpet tile collections can work together in a space and provide options not only for zoning, but that support the diverse needs of the building’s occupants through a carefully considered colour and pattern choice.”
Stephanie Bonduelle, Managing Director, Tétris, UK, comments: “The user experience was at the centre of the design process and we created a collaborative, sustainable, inclusive, health-led, tech-smart, energy-efficient and flexible workplace to meet JLL’s brief. The attractive and vibrant new workplace has spaces for every need and features a diverse mix of spaces, from breakout areas and innovation zones, to study libraries and wellbeing spaces.”
The choice of styles from each of the carpet tile collections bring in a range of contemporary colours and patterns perfectly in tune with the design ethos and the creation of a welcoming place to work. Andrew O’Donnell, UK Real Estate and Workplace Director at JLL is quoted as saying that the space, which spans the second and third floors at 20 Water Street, has been imagined to centre on the value of coming into the office – chiefly the benefits that can be gained from contacts and connections.
The inclusive workplace also caters to different faiths, physical abilities, gender identities and neurodiversities. Inclusive elements include darker study booths, quiet zones, intuitive spatial arrangements, demarcation of zones using colours and different surfaces for ease of navigation, a multi-faith room, and parents’ room.
Shaw Contract’s Auxiliary carpet tile collection is inspired by the transitions in nature, such as the the changing colours of the seasons. It offers options for the creation of subtle transitions across the floor and in this project was specified in warm blush and pink tones. For example style Detail in colour Pebble/Blossom and style Complement in colours Blossom and Blush. Meanwhile style Feature in colour Smoke/Spring was specified for a defining perimeter border in one of the meeting rooms.
The Simply by Nature collection is also inspired by bringing the outside in with colours Mirror Grey and Mountain View specified. Styles Arrange 5T332 and Structure 5T335 bring a fresh look to collaborative and meeting areas, that reference organic colour and patterns and work with the use of indoor plants through the interior.
Style Nook in colour Cobblestone and Looking Glass from Rapid Select were chosen to provide a calming, neutral element for quiet zones and huddle spaces. While style Graph in colour Looking Glass was specified for the study library areas with its linear patterning providing a contemporary look.
Shaw Contract’s EMEA range of commercial flooring solutions featured in this project are Indoor Air Comfort GOLD certified, by independent European body Eurofins. The carpet tiles also contribute points to each of the BREEAM, WELL and SKA certifications that this fit out has received.
