The interiors and fashion world has embraced Maximalism enthusiastically, so it’s not surprising to find it infiltrating the tile industry. Maximalism isn’t about any one material or style, but the bold use of pattern or colour or both in an extensive way in a space. It could be a richly veined marble effect, it could be extra-big chunks of terrazzo-style chips or an oversized leaf or floral pattern digitally printed on to porcelain slabs. Often it’s the saturated use of colour in an interior, with a hue that’s arresting rather than subtle….so a Blue-Green, Magenta or Spiced Orange.

WARM METAL AND HOT SPICE
Metallics serve a functional purpose in design and are rarely out of fashion, but their use does alter. In 2018/2019 we’re seeing a lot more warm finishes – golds, coppers, rose gold and bronze – and these finishes are often being incorporated into design in a way that isn’t too showy, perhaps just as an accent such as an edging or in a geometric mash-up, or even inspiring glazes that aren’t necessarily metallic but definitely in the hot and spicy end of the spectrum. Dulux has recently announced its Colour of the Year as Spiced Honey, so expect to see a lot of saffron, ochre and honey hues.
