This major development encompasses the main commercial thoroughfares of Patrick Street, Academy Street, Emmett Place and Bowling Green Street in Cork. The E90 million development has created a new pedestrianised shopping street in the city centre, with a total of 315,000 sq ft of high end retail and residential units within a six storey building over a two storey basement that also includes car parking. Triton Conservation Systems were contracted to waterproof the basement retail space and designed a system for the -1 level comprising a range of Triton products.
Triton TT Super provided an anti-lime coating to the reinforced concrete walls whilst Trimol 40 epoxy coating was used to tank the wall/floor junction before the creation of a blockwork upstand, created to house the Triton Aqua Channel installed around the perimeter. TT Super is a surface applied system which waterproofs and protects concrete in depth. It is supplied as a powder which only needs mixing with water before application. When applied to a concrete surface, the active chemicals combine with the free lime and moisture present in the capillary track to form insoluble crystals, which block capillaries and minor shrinkage cracks to prevent any further water ingress (even under pressure).
Trimol 40 is a water based epoxy coating (primer and topcoat) designed to be used as a damp proof membrane where none exists or as a tanking layer between sand and cement renders.
Platon Multi cavity drain membrane was installed to the reinforced concrete walls, draining in to the Aqua Channel drainage conduit, which discharges through the floor slab into drainage pipes at car park level below, and ensures no ingress of water in to the basement retail space.
Cavity drain membranes provide an alternative to conventional cementitious tanking systems – which work by holding the water back. Cavity drain membranes work on the principle of allowing water to continue to penetrate the structure but control it in the air gap and divert it to a suitable drainage point.
Triton Conservation Systems has been involved with all types of conservation work for 25 years including dry rot treatment and timber preservation, as well as structural waterproofing to basements using Platon membranes, which are supplied exclusively in Ireland by John Banford of Triton Ireland Building Protection Ltd.
