The refurbishment project is being undertaken to boost capacity ahead of the United Nations World Tourism Authority General Assembly to be held in the town in August 2013.
It involves extension of the airport’s VIP Lounge towards the airside. Various soft refurbishment works are also planned such as the set up of motion-sensor doors and remote air-conditioning for the terminal building to improve its ambience.
The airport is also undertaking a broader $150 million expansion project which includes the construction of a new 4 000-metre runway, a new international terminal building designed to handle 1.2 million passengers, a control tower, and rehabilitation of the car park and current runway.
The widening of the airport road to Victoria Falls Town is expected to complete by 31 December 2014, while the construction of the new runway is expected to complete by April 2015.
