Officials are planning to finalize plans and begin applying for bonds to fund a four-year renovation project that has a price tag of $164 million.

The project is expected to begin in January 2011 and would be completed in time for both, the 100th Rose Bowl game and the return of the BCS Championship game to Pasadena.

The renovation project will remove the lowest 10 rows of seating at the 87-year-old stadium. It will also replace a replica of the 1940s-era scoreboard in one end zone and a high-definition video board in the other.

The most critical part of the renovation is expected to be the overhaul of the press box, which houses suites. Its height would not change, but it would extend farther from the stadium, increasing the suite capacity from 600 to 2,500. Other premium-seat options will also be featured.
