The $24.6 million scheme of East LA Community Corporation has been designed to infuse a new life into the 1889 built Boyle Hotel Cummings Block, which stands at a site across Mariachi Plaza at First Street and Boyle Avenue.
The renovation scheme has been conceived by US-based design practice Richard Barron Architects. The purpose of the project is to convert the pristine hotel into an affordable housing community. The ground floor of the building will house a Mariachi Cultural Center and approximately 4,150 square feet of retail space. The renovated building will feature 51 units of affordable housing which will consist of studio and three-bedroom units.
The renovation was aimed retaining the old charm of the building by preserving the historic portions of the building. The exterior facade of the building went unchanged, while the interior witnessed major changes.
