The new expanded and renovated Art and Design Building will provide 29,000 additional feet of space for the current cramped art and design program at SIUE. It will be designed to house art history, art theory and art education classrooms, as well as office and gallery space. The building will also consolidate all of the art and design programs into one location.

The main force behind the renovation project is to deal with the safety concerns. The college officials have found the existing space to be over crowded for activities such as metalworking and woodworking.

The expanded building that will be connected with the existing building via an enclosed bridge will be about two-thirds the size of the existing building. The existing building will also undergo thorough renovation. The final design work of the building is yet to be complete.
