The expansion and renovation of the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport has been staged in multiple phases, which will enable it to increase its passenger-handling capacity from the current 22 million a year to 62 million by 2014. The renovation will retain the quaint, low-profile layout of the airport, which is marked for its big windows and well-tended tropical gardens between waiting lounges.

The phase I of the project involves expansion of the apron of the airport to hold up to 174 aircraft, up from the current 125, and is expected to increase the frequency of landings and takeoffs per day. Also, as a part of the phase I, the terminal 3 of the airport will be expanded.

The project also involves development of a connecting facility between terminals 1 and 2. The new building will feature the full array of airport services, offered at other places at Soekarno-Hatta, and will also include a shopping mall and hotel.

The new building will also serve as a transit hub, with automated people carriers to transport passengers between terminals, as well as a bus terminal and a railway station connecting the airport to downtown Jakarta.

Further work involves development of a new cargo terminal and other commercial and office facilities. The project also involves construction of two train lines from Manggarai Station in South Jakarta to Soekarno-Hatta’s Terminal 3.

The project is scheduled for completion by 2014 and is likely to entail an investment of $1.5 billion.
