The hospital will submit a formal application to the state of Memphis seeking approval for the tower. The new tower would be a mirror image of the existing Chili’s Care Center and will be located at 315 Danny Thomas Place beside the Chili’s Care Center.

The tower will consist of replacement facilities for its surgical department and intensive care unit. Plans also include a department of computational biology and a global education and collaboration center. Additional components of the new tower include a new proton-beam therapy center for inpatient and outpatient paediatric cancer treatment.

The new tower is a part of St Jude’s master plan for expansion. The application is expected to be heard in mid-2011. Construction is expected to begin in early 2012 and reach completion in four and half years. The project will not alter the hospital’s licensing as a 78-bed general hospital.
