Built over 175 acres of land, the airport will have a 9,000-by-150-foot runway and is designed to handle aircraft as large as Boeing 747-400s. The new terminal building of the airport will feature three floors with 129,870 square feet of floor space and is expected to break ground soon.
The airport is expected to handle more than five times the number of passengers than the islands’ existing E.T. Joshua Airport, post completion.
The project broke ground on 13 August 2008 and is expected to be complete by the end of 2012. The airport is being developed by the International Airport Development Company (IADC), a private limited liability company wholly owned by the government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
