The modernisation and expansion project at the Tabuk airport involved incorporating state-of-the-art aviation facilities with new runways. It covered renovation of 18 buildings and construction of a new terminal. Featuring panoramic front designs, the new airport is expected to boost the growth of Tabuk province.
The General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) in Saudi Arabia announced that it would shift flight operations from the existing Tabuk airport to the newly constructed terminal on 18 April 2011. The airport will also begin operations of international flights soon with the GACA currently studying applications from three airlines — FlyDubai, AlMasria Universal and Nile Air.
The expansion project was carried out by GACA to meet the requirements of the growing number of passengers visiting the Tabuk province. In 2010, the airport handled more than 686,000 passengers and nearly 2,500 tons of cargo.
