The upgrade will enable the facility to satisfy international aviation standards and cope with the increasing passenger traffic in the region.
The scope of the project includes the PHP155 million ($3.2 million) airport terminal building, the PHP625.5 million ($12.8 million) ongoing asphalt overlay on its runway and construction of shore protection structures.
The project is part of the Tacloban Airport Development Project with a total funding of PHP4.13 billion ($82 million), out of which PHP1.14 billion ($23 million) has already been released. The remaining PHP2.9 billion ($61 million) balance, due for release under a multi-year obligation allotment until 2012, will be utilized for the construction of other civil works and building support facilities such as control tower building, fire station, fuel farm and power house among others.
The airport modernization includes provisions for its PHP230 million ($4 million) air navigational facilities and lot acquisition for the new terminal complex area with a PHP130 million ($2 million) budget.
