The stadium, having a total capacity of 21,017, was completed in the year 2008 by a Chinese construction company and had hosted some of the some matches during the 2008 African Cup of Nations.

The concerns regarding the stadium’s upgrades were brought to light by the Parliamentary Select Committee on Youth, Sports and Culture chairman Stephen Ackah, on an inspection tour along with the committee members. The aim of this tour was to allow the members to assess the allocation of the funds for the projects. The key areas assessed by the committee members included the gymnasium, dressing rooms for players and referees, hostel facilities, restaurant and stores and the spectator stands.

The facilities of the stadium that still require completion are the hotel, restaurant, stores and conference rooms.

At the end of the inspection Ackah informed the media that the unfinished portions might not be a part of the first phase of the contract. He added that such works were often completed in phase and assured that the findings would be presented to the parliament.
