The Chatwal New York is the first hotel in a new chain of luxury properties opened by American-Indian entrepreneur Sant Singh Chatwal. The landmark building was once home to the famous Lambs Club, America’s first professional theatre club. Thierry Despont has fused Art Deco allure with modern luxury in the new property.
Thierry Despont has beautifully restored and modernised this iconic midtown Manhattan address, ensuring that no detail has been overlooked. All the guestrooms and suites in this five-star hotel are conceived as works of art.
The architect has derived inspiration from the gifted Malletier luxury trunk designers of the 18th century. The property features Chatwal Classic Guestroom, Stanford Guestroom, and Chatwal Theatre Guestroom, featuring custom-designed luxuries while meticulously recreating 1930s Deco design. In-room finishes include fine suede covered walls, leather wrapped double closets, desk and night stands. A private bar includes bespoke cocktail set and menus, custom Chatwal playing cards and backgammon set. Bathrooms feature mirrored walls and toto toilets. French Doors lead to a spacious radiant heated fully furnished terrace and an individual canopy.
Chatwal Premier Junior Suite features a sitting enclave with a large sofa, club chairs, coffee table and a second flat screen television, besides all of the Chatwal Hotel’s custom designed amenities and luxuries. Some other suites are Chatwal Classic One Bedroom Suite, The Landmark Three Bedroom Suite, The Directors Suite and The Producers Suite.
Despont has integrated subtle nods to the structure’s theatrical and historical origins. A floor-to-ceiling 18th century stone fireplace has been added as a centrepiece for the hotel’s restaurant, the Lambs Club. The restaurant’s walls are lined with black-and-white photographs of original Lambs. Elliptical doors, originally part of the Grill Room, have been restored and reinstalled in the private function room. The building’s exterior has been restored with its original marble ram heads and a marble plaque.
The Chatwal New York features a 4,500 square feet penthouse floor—named the Barrymore Suite containing four guestrooms, four full bathrooms, two sitting rooms, dining rooms, kitchenettes, private heated outdoor terrace, and a roof deck overlooking 44th Street. The Stanford White Studio has been refurbished with the original oak wood-paneled walls, a granite fireplace with a detailed wood mantle, and a fully furnished private outdoor terrace.
The Spa Chatwal features three treatment rooms, three private changing suites with steam showers, a relaxation lounge with spa aperitifs, signature infinity lounge with a saltwater lap pool and two plunge pools offering hot and cold therapy, a fitness centre, and a manicure and pedicure studio.
The opening of the Chatwal New York marks the launch of the chairman and CEO of Hampshire Hotels & Resorts Sant Chatwal’s new luxury hotel brand, the Chatwal.
