The 1891-built DeTurk Round Barn is a National Historic Registry building. The barn has been renovated to serve as the new community centre for the City of Santa Rosa Recreation and Parks Department.

The barn has been expanded to include new restrooms, a catering kitchen and storage areas. Part of the project also included the reconstruction of an adjacent dog park and rose-garden.

The project required maintenance of the historical integrity of the barn, while integrating it with new technology and structural support to fit the modern needs of a multi-use facility. The barn’s redwood support beams were reclaimed and re-milled to be used as wall siding in addition to newly crafted steel support beams and staircases.

The project also saw the use of recycled wood flooring made from large shipping containers that were used throughout the project. Additional sustainable features include radiant floor slab heating, a giant ceiling fan and operable skylights for passive cooling.

Apart from functioning as a local community centre, the barn will also be used as a public rental space for weddings, educational events, gallery spaces, speaking engagements, educational courses, and physical education programs.
