The facility at 286 Hawkins Road has been designed by L.K. McLean Associates, P.C. from Brookhaven, NY and will house the Brookhaven Town Parks Department administration and Selden Centereach Youth Association. It will also act as a children and teens recreation centre. It has been designed in an Adirondack-pattern and features rustic stone exterior with interiors adorned in white oak. The structure also comprises green window trim to give the feel of a park and has gabled roofs instead of a flat roof.
The building incorporates various green features which includes installation of energy-efficient solar panels as well as insulated panels to restrict air leakage. Further, it is equipped with exterior shingles running low on maintenance in addition to under-floor air circulation for heating and cooling made possible by a floor built 2 feet higher than the slab foundation. The building uses a geothermal system for both heating and cooling.
All light fixtures are energy-efficient, which will cut down on electrical consumption. The offices and conference rooms feature motion sensing light switches which turn the lights to half power when someone enters the room. If increased lighting is needed, the occupant can turn the lights to full power. The lights will automatically shut off if the room is unoccupied for any length of time.
The project has received funding of $400,000 from Congressman Tim Bishop (D-Southampton) through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Work began on the project in mid-2010 and was completed within 11 months.
