The project will increase office space by 16,500 square meters, a 60% increase on the current available office space. The new building is expected to allow UN agencies based outside the compound to move into the headquarters.
UN Office of Nairobi (UNON) director general Steiner said that several environment-friendly features have been integrated into the project. The new office facility is expected to lay down high energy-efficiency standards.
Some of the green features include rainwater harvesting, treatment of waste water for irrigation purposes, and generating solar power from a solar panel installation on the roof.
The project is scheduled to be completed by late 2010.
