Hendrick Construction transformed the Freedom Mall into an office space called the Valerie C. Woodard Office Center. It will house Technology and Real Estate Services, Information Services and Social Services departments of the Mecklenburg County.
The building has several green features which includes an under-floor air distribution system and eco-friendly paints, carpets and furniture. Recycled materials are used throughout the building with an irrigation system which collects and stores rainwater. Rain gardens incorporated at the facility cool and cleanse the movement of storm water. The day lighting design is integrated in the building with the artificial lighting controls to dim the lamps and save energy.
Once the third phase of the renovation completes, it will accommodate more than 1,000 employees in around 400,000 square feet of space.
