The underground steam system owned, operated and maintained by Veolia Energy, totals about 22 miles in length and serves approximately 240 customers. By utilizing Veolia’s steam throughout the facility, the winter peak electrical demand is effectively eliminated. In addition, the steam eradicates the need for boilers, eliminates another source point for air emissions, lessens in-house maintenance requirements and makes available valuable space that can be used for the club’s core business.
Partnering with Veolia’s district energy network in Boston compliments, Equinox’ s other green initiatives include selection of finish materials to include recycled and renewable materials, implementation of eco-friendly innovations such as Lutron lighting, Trion air, and GE water; use of low-toxic and natural cleaning products to improve indoor air quality while maintaining a standard of cleanliness, use of recycled paper, and sale of organic clothing and eco-friendly re-usable water bottles in their shops.
