Designed by Prairie Architects, the centre was awarded green certification for the slew of green elements incorporated in its design and other sustainable features including water and energy efficiency and material usage.
West End used an existing building and added additional space, which brought about a reduction of 45% in design energy cost. The centre has erosion and sedimentation control systems. The facility has water conserving fixtures and landscape apart from a rain water harvesting system, which includes a permanent irrigation system that draws water from a rainwater cistern tank.
The HVAC&R Equipment used in the building emits less CFC. The project earned LEED points for extensive recycling and reusage of materials and local material sourcing. More than 75% of the construction waste was diverted from landfills.
The interior spaces were done up in low emitting materials such as paints and coating, adhesives and sealants, composite wood and laminate adhesives, which resulted in superior interior environment.
