The $2 million FedEx building spanning 5,000 square feet near the corner of 40th Street and 4th Avenue Extension will be designed to house a new package sorting facility that Federal Express will lease from the airport authority. The airport officials are planning to convert the current FedEx facility into a new airplane hangar.

The new more spacious package sorting facility and retail centre will be located close to airport services and is expected to be more convenient for the public. The retail centre will contain a 5,000 square feet building and 10,000 square feet under canopy for truck loading and unloading.

The groundbreaking for the new FedEx facility event followed on the heels of the ‘Throw the Switch’ ceremony held on 11 January 2011 at the airport for the just-completed solar shade project. This project is designed to offer shaded parking while generating power for the terminal.

Wayne Splawn, project manager for LPC Construction, stated that the building will be designed by incorporating green features to set a new standard for green construction in the community. The building will be a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-certified building.

Construction of the FedEx center is expected to last for five months.
